A little bit of History
Sha-Roe is quite simply a treasure of gastronomy, nestled in the picturesque village of Clonegal, Co. Carlow. The multi-award winning bistro continues to wow visitors with its simple and elegant approach to food.
Henry Stone and his Swiss wife, Stephanie Barrillier met while working in Marlfield House in Gorey, where Henry’s reputation as head chef was a major draw. In 2002 Henry was awarded a 3 AA Rosette whilst working there. While looking for a venue for their new restaurant idea, the newly-married couple spotted the 18th Century house in Clonegal in January 2005. They spent the summer of that year renovating it into Sha-Roe Bistro, which opened in September.
In 2007 they won The Georgina Campbell ‘Best Newcomer of the Year’. The award was based on the amazing food & wine experience, Stephanie’s front of house charm, as well as the immaculate setting of the beautifully restored restaurant.
‘Our shortlist for Newcomer of the Year was exceptionally strong this year, and it is a great pleasure to hand the title on to such an outstanding little restaurant.’ – Georgina Campbell
This was the first of many awards, with Henry going on to win ‘Best Atmospheric Restaurant of the Year 2010’ and ‘Best Chef of the Year 2011’ with the Georgina Campbell’s Guide.
Henry & Stephanie Stone
Your Chef & Host
Like most chefs, Henry began his love of food at home. His mother was a great cook. He spent a year as a commis-chef in Berne, Switzerland, the preview to starting a two-year professional cookery course in DIT, Cathal Brugha Street.
He worked with Paul Flynn in La Stampa, before travelling to Australia. When he returned he spent seven years in Marlfield House, Gorey, where he was employed as head chef. He has worked on ‘stages’ with renowned Chefs, such as Gordon Ramsey.
Henry delights in food discoveries and both simple and complex recipes. His love of food never diminishes.
Stephanie Stone (nee Barrillier) is a native of Geneva, Switzerland. She has worked in The Shelbourne and Marlfield house as a waitress and receptionist. Her knowledge of languages and excellent front of house skills has helped Sha-Roe to gain a reputation for friendliness and professionalism for those visiting Clonegal.
